Making The Breathing Room
Combining notes from past works revolving around ideas of light being a medium to visualise the invisible and light sensitive processes used to obtain images of the land, The Breathing Room is ignited in the thought of immersing an audience in the rich and brimming layers of history that is written underneath our feet. As if having fallen down the rabbit hole, this immersive experience began with experiments of creating abstract tree structures, painted with soil projections. These structures could be engaged with and walked around; as if walking through a root system. This idea eventually grew into a fully covered room that engulfed the audience rather than a single installation presented on one wall. Yet, this installation analyses my research questions around how photography can challenge the concept of reality and how past layers of history can merge with new life to form living timelines, that are always in motion. The work also experiments with the power of light to tell stories, capture ambiences that would otherwise be invisible and widen our perspective of greater natural process that orbit around what it means to be human.
